Obituary for Betty Tunnell (Gayer)

Betty Lou Tunnell (Gayer), age 87, entered eternal rest May 13, 2018, at her home in Warrenton, MO after a few months of illness.
She was born to Lemuel and Elsie Mae Gayer (Adcock) in Miller, MO. She was baptized at New Home Baptist Church in Turnback Creek at the age of 14. Betty was married for 55 years to James Blaine Tunnell, who passed away in 2006. They made their living on a farm north of Mt. Vernon, MO for over 30 years and together they raised two children, Lyndall James (Kathy Larson) of Athens, GA and Connie Lou (Roy Gray) of Warrenton. They greatly enjoyed their two grandchildren, 2nd Lt. James Blaine Tunnell and Arienna Jasmine Gray.
Betty had a Mt. Vernon address for 55 years. She was in the Heart o’ th’ Hills Club (65 years); Ozark Prairie Presbyterian Church (35 years); First Christian Church (20+ years), where she was Elder Emeritus, and Twentieth Century Club and Red Hat Club for many years. In 2006, she and Blaine moved to Warrenton to be near their daughter.
Betty is survived by one brother, James Gayer (Betty Ann), of Miller. Her brothers Kenneth Gayer and Keith Gayer preceded her in death.
Her sister-in-law, Esther Tunnell, lives in Battlefield, MO. She also enjoyed a sisterly relationship with her friend of over 73 years, Thelma Hodges, of Mt. Vernon.
Services will be on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 11 a.m., at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mt. Vernon. Family visitation is at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be given to BJC Foundation for Hospice, P.O. Box 790369, St. Louis, MO 63179-9917, or First Christian Church of Mt. Vernon.
