John Leo Wagner, 98 years, Springfield, formerly of Republic, MO passed away July 5, 2021 in the home surrounded by family. John was born on March 24, 1923 to John Raymond and Agnes (Thiel) Wagner. John was one of 14 children. John joined the US Navy at 19 years of age and served in WWII. Following his return from the war, he began his career at Southwestern Bell (retired after 39 years).
On September 11, 1946 he married the love of his life, Edna Evelyn Sater. He then returned to the navy and served in the Korean war.
As a veteran, he was a Purple Heart recipient and was proud to serve his country. John and Edna shared 8 children. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna of 62 years, daughter Mary Elizabeth, wife Mary of 11 years, grandson George, and most recently daughter in law Stella. He is survived by his siblings: Al (Velma), Bob, and Alice (Bob)Allyn. His kids John Richard (Gail), Bill (Dianne), Margaret (Monte) Skinner, Mark, Susan Ricketts, Steven (Patricia) and James (Jolene). He was blessed with 27 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great, grandchildren.
John had strong priorities he loved God with his whole heart and served Him faithfully. He loved family and built strong families ties to withstand time. Not a day went by without him talking about his grandkids where they were and what were they doing. His greatest wish was for them to be happy, be safe and follow God’s calling for their life. John was proud to be a veteran of the United States Navy and loved continuing to reminisce stories from his service time.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East, 3540 East Seminole, Springfield, Mo.
Graveside services with full military honors will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2021 in Antioch Cemetery north of Springfield.
