Obituary for Martha Jean Baack (Lautenschlager)

Martha Jean Baack died on November 4, 2018 at the age of 88. She was born July 29, 1930 in West Virginia to Rev. Paul and Evelyn Lautenshlager. The family also lived in Maryland and Ohio, where her father served congregations. Jean attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio for two years. There she met future husband, Rev. Edward Baack. They married in Paris, Ohio in August 1949. The couple lived in Columbus until Ed completed his work at Capital University and the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary. Jean and Ed began their ministry at St. John Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, Kansas. The couple had three children during that time. The family than moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where Ed and Jean helped to establish a mission church. Following the completion of the church construction project, they accepted the call to serve our Saviour’s Lutheran in Lincoln, Nebraska. After moving to Springfield Missouri in 1975, they began a mission congregation in Ava, Missouri, commuting twice each week to construct a church facility and hold worship services. A short time later, another group asked for their guidance, leading to the formation of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield. During those years Jean served as organist, choir director, painter, and in numerous other ways. The entire family sang together at many church functions and services led by her two daughters, Marie and Sharon playing the guitar. The family also enjoyed sing-alongs at home, often with friends and visitors joining in.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edward, her parents, Rev. Paul and Evelyn Lautenschlager, and foster son Steven Kepford. She is survived by her three children, daughter Marie Krause and her husband Larry of Springfield, son, Donald Baack and wife Pam of Joplin, and daughter Sharon Baack of Springfield; as well as two brothers, Paul and Luther Lautenschlager; and a sister, Mary Lou Kelly. She is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.
As a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Jean will be remembered as a kind soul who loved to please others. At many family meals she made a point of making a special dish for her children and grandchildren. She treasured her time at family gatherings. She was loved by her extended family and was cherished by members of her congregations, and friends from all the times in her life.
