Alma Patricia (Pat) McGilvry Smith was born April 3, 1938 to Harold McGilvry and Pearl Mitchell McGilvry in Fair Grove, Missouri and departed this life on February 21, 2024. She is survived by her three children; RuthAnn Moore Hawkins (Paul), Willis Moore (Dwanette) and Dana Tindell (Randy), her loving sisters, Margaret Boles and Ruthie Welty (Steve); a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Pat was the first-born child to Harold and Pearl, she was a beautiful girl, inside and out. She was fiercely independent and head strong. She attended Fair Grove School from 1st grade through 12th grade and made lots of lifelong friends. She grew up helping on the farm, visiting with all the close neighbors, and attended the little community church called Sunnyvale. She expressed her belief that Jesus was her savior at age 7 and was baptized in a creek east of Fair Grove at age 13. She had a lifelong love for Jesus, for her family and her friends. Pat was always making new friends, as evidenced by when she started helping at her church’s Youth Group Wednesday night meetings. She helped with serving the meal and by loving on those kids! Probably the two things she did best was loving people and feeding them!
Pat was a hard worker and worked outside the home on many occasions, everything from factory work to driving a school bus! For fun she loved to read and work in her flower garden.
Pat married Everett Moore when she was only 16 years old and was married to Everett for 21 years. To this union three children were born, RuthAnn Moore Hawkins (Paul), Willis Moore (Dwanette) and Dana Tindell (Randy). She loved her children deeply and these three gave her 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Later in life Pat found a new love, Wesley Smith and they were married on June 6, 1987. She became a loving stepmother to Wesley’s four adult children: Terri Edgar (Fred), Greg Smith, Todd Smith (Ann) and Bruce Smith (Krista). Through Wesley’s children Pat became a grandma to an additional 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren that she loved like her own.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her brother-in-law Joe Bill Boles, and her husband Wesley.
She is survived by her children and her two loving sisters, Margaret Anne Boles and Ruthie Jane (Steve) Welty, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, her cousins and a host of loving nieces and nephews from both her sisters’ and Wesley’s families.
Pat had the gift of hospitality and practiced it daily. Growing up all her kids were always bringing home friends for her to feed! RuthAnn shared that she can remember her Dad (Everett) bringing home all kinds of people to be fed and maybe even spend the night. Everyone always wanted to stop by Pat’s house for a meal because she was so gracious, such a good cook, and she set a lovely table! She continued to take food to people who were sick even after her own cancer diagnosis back in October. RuthAnn would ask her how she’s dealing with everything related to her cancer diagnosis and she would reply, “Honey, I have a real peace about all of this.” A peace, a peace that only God can give that passes all understanding. John 14:27 …my peace I give. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Adapted from a Blue Mountain Arts poem from a card RuthAnn sent to her Mom years ago: “A treasure is something really special…something irreplaceable, something you wouldn’t want to lose for anything…something you value highly, hold close to your heart, protect, and appreciate so much. Momma, we want you to know what a treasure you’ve been to us”
