Alva P. McCullough was born on February 6, 1926. He grew up in Isabella, Missouri. Alva was a World War II veteran and proud to serve his country. Alva was always a teacher at heart. After the war Alva started teaching in a one room schoolhouse in Isabella, MO in Ozark County. After a courtship with Glenda Upton and marriage proposal, Glenda and Alva were married on May 15th, 1948 in Mt. Home, AR. Alva and Glenda have celebrated over 73 years of marriage. Around this same time Alva decided that if he was going to continue to teach, he would need to get a college education. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1952 with his Master of Education he took a job teaching with Springfield School System at Bissett Elementary School then later at Weller Elementary. A few years later Alva became principal of Shady Dell School and ended his public teaching career as principal at Campbell School. After retiring Alva enjoyed teaching early childhood education to his grandkids. Each grandkid learned to read in addition to other early childhood skills. In return, the grandkids lovingly referred to it as PaPa Mac’s School.
Alva is preceded in death by his parents Rev. C.M. and Cordelia McCullough and siblings George McCullough, Lucille Roberts, Susie Chappell, Vera McCullough, Perry McCullough, Donald McCullough, and Peggy McCullough. He is survived by his wife Glenda and children, Marsha (Gary) Norcross, Sr and Terry (Tracey) McCullough, six grandchildren, Gary (Dina) Norcross, Jr, Jason (Karla) McCullough, Krista (Aaron) Weaver, Sara (Caleb) Carlin, Justin (Diane) Smith, Taylor (Taylor) Triplett, 13 great grandchildren, and siblings Eugie Knight, Gene McCullough, and Joan Stillinger.
