Charlyn Anne Slack passed away Monday, August 10, 2015 at Mercy McCune Brooks Hospital in Carthage, MO after a short illness. She was born August 15, 1928 to Mary Frances Bowman Campbell and Walter Wilson Campbell in the White Oak community of Jasper County. She was a student in the one room Bois D’Arc Grade School, graduated from Golden City High School, and attended SMSU. After meeting Joseph C. Slack at a skating party, they married in 1950 and Springfield was her home for 66 years. She was a career woman working as a stenographer for Lurie Manufacturing and MO Home Life Insurance Co. before spending 28 years as an employee of Campbell “66” Express, Inc. where she began as a stenographer and ended as Executive Secretary. She was an avid antiques collector of many types (furniture, dishes, flow blue, crystal, dolls, postcards, jewelry, jewelry books, jewelry making supplies, oriental decorative items, just to name a few). She saved letters and pictures from family and friends and was a voracious reader…encyclopedias, jewelry books, newspapers, novels, and those collected letters (over and over).
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers; Howard and Scott Campbell and wives Dora and Arline, sisters; Ruth Campbell, and Mary Jane Benton and husband Frank, nephews; Roger Benton, George Campbell and Richard Campbell. She is survived by sister-in-law, Lonna Beth Slack and so many loving nieces and nephews and their spouses: The Campbell Kids; Frances, Martha, Mary, Tom, Judy, Trisha, Scotty, Carrie and the Benton Kids, Susan, Alan and Frances.
Mr. Slack died in 2005 and she stayed in Springfield until 2013 when she moved to an assisted living apartment in Carthage to be closer to family members. During the past 2 years, the oodles of grand nieces and nephews and even more great-grand nieces and nephews have enjoyed visiting her!
She was a special daughter, an adored sibling, a loyal and loving wife, a very good friend, and an absolutely wonderful aunt…just a very sweet special person in every way!
Memorials may be made to the Carthage Public Library for future book purchases. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 14, 2015 at 10 am in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Springfield under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home, South.
