Donald Charles Davis was born in Elkland, Missouri on August 20, 1923 to James Hobart (Red) Davis and Jewel (Gardner) Davis. Don died on August 7, 2009 in Nixa, Missouri. Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1 p.m., in the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, August 9, 2009, 6 to 8 p.m. in Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Don graduated from Elkland High School in 1942 and served in the Philippines in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II. Don married Fern Maxine (Scott) Davis of Niangua on December 24, 1941 and together they reared four children, Sheryl Lynn (Jim) Low, Springfield; Cary Mac (Phyllis) Davis, of Texas, Nancy Donette Gaylor of Oklahoma, and James Scott (Jim) (Christine) Davis of Clever. Following Don’s retirement from Hiland Dairy, he enjoyed fishing, volunteer work for Fair Haven Children’s Home and long distance bicycling. “Speedy Legs” Don could be seen many mornings along I-44 access roads as he conditioned for the MS 150 Bike-A-Thon each year. Throughout his lifetime, Don was a faithful and active member of the North National Church of Christ congregation in Springfield, and was regarded as a giver of self, a provider and a servant whether in the service of his country, his family, his community or his church. Don was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ivan Davis; and sister, Helena Ruth (Davis) Skinner. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Fern, of Nixa; four children, eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren, ensuring Don’s spirit will live on with his characteristics of a pleasant smile, a true heart, an honest mind, a love of God and a firm uncompromising self-discipline and strength. We will miss him. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Fair Haven Children’s Home, Strafford, Missouri.
