Donald Edward Cook of Springfield, MO, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024. He was born on September 13, 1932, in DuQuoin, IL, to Russell and Jennie (Keene) Cook. After graduating from DuQuoin High School he served in the United States Navy aboard a destroyer escort in the Atlantic and Great Lakes. After the Navy he returned to Illinois where he met Phillis June McCrary whom he married in 1956. Donald worked various jobs early in his career including for Caterpillar Inc. in Decatur. However, most of his professional life was spent in the Insurance business. Don started at MFA Insurance (now Shelter Insurance) in Springfield, IL, before relocating to Springfield, MO, to raise their three sons. He retired from Shelter after more than 30 years of service in sales and management.
Donald and Phillis shared a wonderful life. They loved traveling together and took many trips to Europe and Hawaii. They also appreciated spending time with friends and family. Donald also enjoyed the time spent riding his motorcycles.
Donald is survived by his sons Thomas Cook (Wendy) of Eugene, Oregon and David Cook (Lauren) Springfield. Grandchildren Evan, Sarah, Tuesdae and Heather; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his much-loved sister Jane Hill (Richard) of Marion, IL, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Phillis, and son Scott.
A special thank you to Township Senior Living and St Croix Hospice for the care and friendship they provided during the past couple of years. Visitation will be at Greenlawn East Funeral Home from 9:30 am – 10:30 am on Friday, October 11, 2024, followed by a 11:00 am graveside service with military honors at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to C.A.R.E. Animal Rescue or the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri.
