Edward M. Smith, age 87, of Mt. Vernon, MO, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011, in the Mt. Vernon Veterans Home. He was born April 12, 1924, in St. Paul, MN, to Milton and Alice (Melby) Smith. He is a decorated US Army WWII Veteran where he was a combat engineer and demolition specialist, and fought at the Normandy invasion and at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church Hollister, MO, the American Legion Post #220 and VFW of Branson-Hollister.
His parents and a sister Sandra Palm precede him in death.
He is survived by his wife Maxine Smith of the home; a son Ronald Smith of St. Paul, MN; three daughters: Christine Smith of St. Augustine, FL, Rebecca Smith and Colleen Woodley both of St. Paul, MN; four granddaughters: Erica, April, Angela, and Ana; eight great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.
A memorial celebration of Life service is pending at this time, but will be held at the Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Emil Bartos officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, Veterans Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at: www.greenlawnfuneralhome.com.
