Jamie Alva Newman Sr, age 73, of Nixa, MO went to be with the Lord on September 24, 2022, at Mercy Hospital.
Jamie was born November 28, 1948, the son of Joe and Betty Newman. He was raised in southern Springfield, MO, attending school in the Springfield Public School System and graduated from Central High School.
Shortly after graduation Jamie enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter door gunner. Returning stateside he was stationed in Alabama where he met Carol Francis Roth, and they married in 1970. Jamie left the Army in June and returned to Springfield where he worked in construction, plumbing and heating.
In November 1972, Jamie re-enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Gordon, GA; Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Mannheim, Germany; Fort Polk, LA; and Ft. Riley, Kansas. During his twenty-year career, he worked as an aircraft mechanic, helicopter door gunner, 21/2 ton truck driver, military policeman and correctional specialist. Jamie held positions as Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Guard Commander, Chief Correctional Supervisor and Brigade NCO. During Jamie’s military career he was the recipient of many honors in the service to our country: Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, NCO Developmental Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Unit Citation Ribbon, Vietnam Unit Citation Ribbon, Expert Rifle M-16 Badge and Crew Member Wings.
Upon military retirement in 1989 Jamie worked as a civilian security officer, a detention officer for City of Springfield Police Department and in 1996 had been employed as a Bailiff for the Chief Judge of the Springfield Municipal Court System until his retirement. He received the state Bailiff of the Year.
Jamie leaves behind a son, Jamie Newman Jr (Gabriela), 2 daughters; Jenelle Hale (Tyler) and Janine Newman, 3 granddaughters; Breanna, Ashton, and Ariana; 2 grandsons, Jai’Vyon and Fernando; 2 great-granddaughters, Aiyana and Remi; his mother, Betty Newman, 5 brothers; Jackie Newman (Robbie), Jeff Newman (Myrna), Robbie Swearengin, Tim Swearengin, and Ricky Swearengin; 5 sisters; Janie Bartlett (Butch), Janice Boyd, Julie Newman, Joetta Newman and Jennifer Alsup (Logan); a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Jamie was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Newman, his grandson, Jaiden Falls, his Dad, Joe Newman, his biological dad, Willard Swearengin, his maternal grandparents Leonard and Irene Cook and paternal grandparents Max and Lena Newman.
