June L. Bohner, Springfield, passed away on October 16, 2015. June Norfleet was born on May 16, 1925, in Jefferson City, MO, the daughter of William Foster “Jack” Norfleet and Iola Bond Norfleet.
June was united in marriage to Gene W. Bohner on March 17, 1945, in Jefferson City, MO.
June graduated from Jefferson City High School where among her many school and community activities, she served as a cheerleader for her future husband who quarterbacked the Jefferson City Jays football team. June also graduated from Jefferson City Junior College and was a member of the Triple R Club.
June and Gene lived in Jefferson City, MO; Greensboro, NC; and Moberly, MO. before moving to Springfield, in 1952, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
June and Gene had been married 51 years at the time of his death in 1996. In addition, June was preceded in death by her parents; beloved sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and DeWitt Dixon; son-in-law, John Jacobsen; and brother-in-law, Ross Calvert.
June retired as an executive assistant from City Utilities in 1992. June, a lifelong Baptist, was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church. June was active in The Encouragers Class, Bible Study, and City Utilities Retired Employees Association.
June and Gene enjoyed traveling, and June cherished memories of their many travels together, particularly trips to Hawaii and various cruises. June’s active lifestyle included many years of membership at the YMCA where she attended classes at least three times per week. June’s hobbies included many crafts, sewing, needlepoint, cooking, reading, bird watching, viewing and listening to St. Louis Cardinals games, golf tournaments, MSU Lady Bears and Bears basketball games, and attending theatrical productions.
June’s family remembers her as a “world-class” cook and a kind, gentle, loving spirit who always looked for the best in everyone. June’s time was spent taking care of others and putting their needs first. She was unparalleled as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Grandma June’s/Granny’s Sugar Cookies, Apple Dumplings, and Popcorn Balls were favorites among family and friends.
June is survived by her two daughters: Suzanne Brown (Ken); Melinda White (Dudley), all of Springfield; four grandchildren: Cory Fearing (Chad), Springfield; Erin Rison (Justin), Winter Garden, FL; Megan Barnett (Andrew), Glendale, MO; Kasey White (Kandice), Springfield; a step-grandson Brent Brown (Holly); a step-granddaughter, Nicole (Stacey); fourteen great-grandchildren: Hailey and Whitney Fearing; Jacob, Emma and Isabella “Belle” Rison; John and Austin Barnett; Megan and Danny White; Riley, Raegan and Reese Brown; Brooke Taylor; Alexis Frazee; brother-in-law, John Calvert, Portland, OR; niece, Lynn Huff (Johnnie), Independence, MO; nephews, Clint Dixon, Oronogo, MO; Steve Dixon, Independence, MO and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
June’s favorite charities included: JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), Central Florida Chapter, 370 Centerpointe Circle, Suite 1154, Altamonte Springs, Florida 32701, in honor of Belle Rison and Belle’s butterflies, and Hope Foundation (Helping Overcome Pediatric Emergencies) askforhope.org, in honor of Megan White.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at 1:30 pm, in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, with the burial to follow in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the funeral home.
