Kayren “Kay” Lois Binion Cameron of Point Lookout, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009, after a brief illness. Kay was born in Monett, Missouri, on January 2, 1937, to Hazel and James Binion. When Kay was two years old, the family moved to Aurora, Missouri, where Kay attended primary and secondary schools. After graduating from high school in 1955, Kay attended SMSU and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocational Home Economics in 1959. Kay was a member of the home economics and biology honor societies and a member of Delta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority at SMSU. With her degree in hand, Kay taught home economics in secondary schools and at the college level. While at SMSU, Kay met the love of her life, Glen Cameron, on a blind date. After marrying Glen in 1960, Kay had a choice to also get an advanced degree, but chose to raise her family and support Glen in his pursuit of advanced schooling. In 1962, their first son, Kent, was born while both Kay and Glen were working in Kansas City, Missouri. While Glen was finishing his schooling at Fayetteville, Arkansas, their second son, Kirk, was born in 1967. Kay and her family moved to Point Lookout, Missouri, in 1969, when her husband was hired at what was then, The School of the Ozarks. Kay’s life then became deeply entrenched in the college faculty life and all the responsibilities included with it. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Kay was a very successful entrepreneur. Through her own ingenuity, Kay started Cameron’s Crag Bed & Breakfast (B&B) and the Ozark Mountain Country B&B Service, which has booked for over 100 other B&B’s in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas. She started her own publishing company in 1986, called Katydid Publications. Kay developed and published cookbooks and novels including Breakfasts Ozark Style, Grandma’s Ozark Legacy, and a la Rose, a book featuring Ozark recipes from the era of Rose O’Neill. Her businesses continue to thrive today. In addition to promoting tourism in the Branson area, Kay was very active in the community as an Elder of the Chapel of The College of the Ozarks and a member and past president of P. E. O. Chapter IB. Most recently, Kay became a Mate of Sea Scout Ship 63/Boy Scouts of America. Kay was a very generous person who loved meeting people. She was a world traveler with the highlight being able to live in The Netherlands for six months in 2004. She will always be cherished by her husband of 48 years, Glen Cameron; son Kent and his wife, Kenna; three grandchildren, Jensen, Chelney, and Peyton of Leesburg, Virginia; and son Kirk and his wife, Denise of Fort Collins, Colorado. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, in the Chapel of The College of the Ozarks. In lieu of flowers, Kay had requested donations to be made to The College of the Ozarks Scholarship Fund, Box 17, Point Lookout, Missouri, MO 65726 or P.E.O. Chapter IB Educational Loan Fund, c/o Mrs. Ivy Motley, Treasurer, P. O. Box 6760, Branson, MO 65615.
