Ledema Joann Hartley, 91 of Springfield, Missouri passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning in the care of Mercy Hospital. Following a short illness, she is whole now with her loves, husband John Robert and daughter Roberta, in heaven.
Ledema was born August 22, 1930 in Burden, Kansas to Joseph Edward Ivie and Sarah Anne Baldock Ivie. Her younger childhood was spent in Kansas, before the family moved to the Klamath Falls, Oregon area. Ledema graduated from Klamath Falls High School and Grand Canyon Baptist College in Arizona. Following graduation, she relocated to the Denver, Colorado area where she was secretary for the Colorado Baptist Convention. During her time in Colorado, she met and fell in love with John Hartley at church. The two were married there and soon after adopted their first daughter Roberta Joann. A desire to move back to John’s hometown area, moved the family to Missouri and they purchased a small farm north of town. Ledema was a dedicated mother and homemaker, growing the farm and also the family. Soon, the youngest adopted daughter, Martha Lynn, joined the family.
Members of Glidewell Baptist Church, Ledema and family were very involved in not only the church, but the bedroom community. Years later, the family joined Baptist Temple in Springfield and continued their Christian service. As the girls grew older, Ledema took a part-time bookkeeper position at Christian Schools of Springfield, affiliated with Baptist Temple and then later took a role in the office at University Heights Baptist Church, continuing her love of book keeping and Christian service.
Ledema loved caring for family, others in need and building a life with John. A skilled seamstress and cook, she used those talents to share her love through canning, baking, favorite family recipes and providing for her family. With the family grown, John and Ledema sold the farm and moved to north Springfield to be closer to church, conveniences and live out later retirement years. Always proud of their home, it was a gathering place for family and celebrations/holidays, always open to those they loved.
Following the loss of her husband, John — Ledema continued being active in church, helping those in need and providing for family. She was seen walking the neighborhood daily and cared for everyone she met. In the past couple of years, she lived actively at Marantha Village in Springfield and continued to enjoy family, friends and loved ones.
Ledema is preceded in death by parents, Joseph Ivie, Sarah (Baldock) Ivie and step-mother Bertha Ivie; siblings
