Loraine Freise Heidorn, a lifelong Lutheran and a spirited great-great-grandma, died October 20, 2014, at the glorious age of 100 years plus 10 months. She was best-known for her energy, her unfailing memory, her ability to spot a bargain from a mile away and her love for her family.She was married to her beloved Raymond for forty five years, until his death in 1982. They lived in the Chicago area and later in Springfield, Mo. Loraine lived her final years in Tallahassee, Fla.She was blessed with three sons – James (wife Janet), who preceded her in death; Mark (wife Priscilla), Tallahassee; and David (wife Elizabeth), Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren – Jon (wife Debbie), Joel (wife Jessie), Maria, Kevin, Zoe, Emma and Sam; six great-grandchildren – Michael, Mikaela, Matthew, Mitchell, Grace and Daniel; and four great-great-grandchildren – Elijah, Ezekiel, Alessa and Bridget. Loraine also was “mom” to Delores Tulfo and Marilyn Walsh.She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Michael and Ellen Gustafson, and a brother, Herbert Freise, all offspring of Louis Freise and Marie Kirchhoff Freise. When Loraine was born the day after Christmas 1913, the family lived in Schaumburg, Ill., northwest of Chicago. Five years later they moved to nearby Palatine, Ill., where Loraine attended Immanuel Lutheran School. In 1932 she graduated from Luther Institute High School in Chicago. She and Ray lived in Chicago from their wedding in 1937 to 1959, when they moved to nearby Park Ridge.Wherever she lived, Loraine was active in the Lutheran Church. After Ray’s retirement, for example, they moved to Springfield, where they attended Trinity Lutheran. That’s where Loraine was active in the Women’s League. Also in Springfield she volunteered at the KOZK Telethon, ushered at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts and was a greeter at the Tourist Center.Loraine was also a frequent tourist herself. In fact, she traveled to every state in the U.S. and every province in Canada, and she and Ray even traveled as far away as Papua New Guinea, where their son Mark was a missionary.She spent the last 10 years of her life astounding people who couldn’t believe that anyone with such a sharp mind could actually be in her 90s. The matriarch of the Heidorn family was one of a kind, and her family misses her already.Services for Loraine will be Friday, October 24, 2014 in Greenlawn Funeral Home South at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Burial will follow service in Hazelwood Cemetery.
