He is preceded in death by his wife, Monta “Skip” Russell, his parents, one son, Gary Dean Russell, and one brother, Warren “Doc” Russell. He is survived by his niece, Debi and husband L.R. Stewart, grandson; Jay Russell, granddaughter; Cindy and husband Jim Holopter, and great-granddaughter; Megan Morgan. He is also survived by three special nieces; Linda Reeve, Terri Cravens, and Diane and husband Frank Koch. Rusty was always ready for adventure, even at an early age. So, at the early age of 12 he left home trekking out on his own to work on near-by farms, making his way along. At the age of 17, he joined the Army Air Force, becoming a tailgunner in B-25’s and B-26’s, flying several missions for the 12th Airborne, 319th Bomb Group, 437th Squadron, and Colonel Randy’s Flying Circus. He flew several missions under Jimmie Doolittle. On December 23, 1963, he married the love of his life, Monta Skip Russell, to which they shared a wonderfully adventurous life. Together, they travelled all over creation in dune buggies and on motorcycles. They did it all. They retired in Republic, MO. and settled in. The American Legion Post #639 became one of their favorite hangouts, where they met and made many wonderful friends. They took motorcycle trips galore. They lived life to the fullest, as we all should, thanking God every day for the gift of life. Visitation will be Sunday, October 4, 2015, 3:00-5:00pm, at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Funeral service will be Monday, October 5, 2015, 1:00pm, also at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, at which time military honors will be rendered.
