Lovingly written by her family.
Mary Crownover passed away on July 31, 2021 in the home of her granddaughter and family in Spring, Texas. She was living with her daughter, granddaughter and her husband, 7 great grandchildren, and 3 dogs. It was a full house but she loved it and helped out by sweeping and mopping and playing with the kids. She had just turned 96.
Mary was born in Springfield, Mo and met her husband Jim Crownover at an end of the year Senior dance for soldiers going off to war. They married in 1945 and moved to Schenectady, NY where their daughter Sue Marie was born. Jim was transferred to St. Louis, Mo in 1952 where their son John David was born.
Everyone knew Mary and Mary knew everyone. She never met a stranger and always remembered their names. She was active in the school PTA when the kids were in school and did charity work at their church. Mary became a nurse and worked at Deaconess hospital as a surgical scrub nurse until she retired. She loved working with International Friends, helping those young women that came with their husbands that were at St. Louis University, to navigate their new lives and learn English. Many of these women called her “Mom”. They were members of Parkway Baptist Church in Creve Coeur for over 55 years and she was the hostess there until her 90th birthday. Mary and Jim had a large celebration for their 70th anniversary and were looking forward to their 75th when Jim passed away six months before on July 5, 2020.
Mary was the matriarch of a large Springfield family, where her mother’s brother married her father’s sister. She loved family reunions and kept us all informed about each other and our family lineage. Although she was the oldest of 5 siblings, she is only survived by her youngest brother Walter Boyts of Springfield. She is also survived by her daughter Sue Maughan of Spring, Texas, her son John Crownover of Huntsville, Alabama, 3 grandchildren; Andrew Maughan, David Maughan and Leah Poole and 11 great grandchildren.
Mary was kind, loving and giving to all who knew her. She had a great sense of humor and was making us laugh even at the end of her life. Mary Louise Boyts Crownover will be greatly missed.
