Nora Mae Gunderson, age 89 of Rogersville, Mo passed away on June 12, 2024, at the Lakewood – Arbors Memory Center in Springfield, Mo. Nora was born to George and Alla Cox on May 21, 1935 in Houston, Mo. She graduated from Houston High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to Gary Gunderson on November 9, 1957, in Springfield, Mo. Nora and Gary shared 66 years and 7 months of marriage before Nora’s passing.
Nora was employed at Brown Shoe Co. in Houston and subsequently moved to Springfield where she was employed by Lily Tulip Cup corporation. She later went to work as a clerk at JC Penny and retired as Floor Supervisor.
Nora was very talented in arts and crafts, including ceramics and quilting, and became very talented at oil painting. She was a member of General Baptist Church and served in many volunteer positions at Redeemer Lutheran Church where she was confirmed as a member in 1961 and became a part of the core group that started Redeemer. She was a choir member, served as a caretaker in the Blind Ministry, Altar Guild, a member of the Board of Directors, and the Church Endowment Board. She was always ready to help with food preparation for special events and was also a sewing instructor for younger girls as a volunteer with the local Peace Corp. Agency, and assisted with the Loft Ministry, a mission group in downtown Springfield.
Nora was preceded in death by her parents George and Alla Cox and her brothers Harold, George Jr. and Hubert.
She is survived by her husband Gary Gunderson, daughter Vickie Lehenbaur, and her husband Mark, daughter Elaine Garrison and her husband Rich, sister Betty Kaye Wieder, and her husband Richard, grandchildren Amery Friedrichs and her husband Tony, Bryce Garrison and his fiancée Katelyn, Christopher Garrison, and great-grandchildren Miles and Claire Friedrichs.
The family would also like to give a special thank you to the staff at Lakewood Arbors for their loving care.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 22, 2024, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Springfield, Missouri at 11:00 am, with a one-hour visitation before the service at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Nora’s memory to the Missouri Chapter of The Alzheimer’s Association 901 E. St. Louis St. Springfield, MO 65806.
