We lost our rock, our best friend, our light, our love,
Norma Jean Buchanan, 81, of Springfield passed away early Saturday morning in her home surrounded by her family. She was born May 22, 1934 to Harry and Gladys Edmonds. She was given a sister and friend, Lena Stacey of Elkland to accompany her through her early years. Jeanie as her husband of nearly 64 years, Paul, called her is the mother of three, grandmother to four, and great grandmother to 5. She married Paul Buchanan in 1952 and soon thereafter began a life as a military man’s wife and mother to their first daughter. The trio lived in Kentucky and Colorado before settling back down in Springfield where they would continue to grow their family and live the remainder of their days.
Jeanie worked well into her seventies whether she needed to or not. She loved being a help to people so a career in food service was her calling. She fed the staff at COX, was everyone’s favorite lunch lady at Kickapoo, and made her food truck “Chug-N-Chew” cool at local fairs and events long before anyone. She was a member of Church of Christ.
She brought to this world oldest daughter Karen Copeland of Springfield who has two children Matt Wolfel Springfield, Marti Edwards Springfield and her four children. Her middle child and second daughter Cheryl Nelson, Springfield with two sons Cory Nelson and Trevor Nelson with one son. Her son Micky Buchanan who shared her birthday of Springfield was her youngest child.
She had a gentle touch with animals, plants, and other’s feelings. If you couldn’t find her in the garden, antique store, or park, she was sure to be at the table with a cup of coffee in one hand and a sweet roll in the other listening intently with knees crossed. I would give anything to be able to refill your cup one more time my closest of friends. Please know how deeply we all love you and how each day will be less till the day we see you again.
Keep watch now from above and continue to be the light on our paths.
