Opal Thomas of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021. She was born in Protem, MO on September 26, 1922 to Harve and Jennie (Braly) Thornton.
Opal married John McClurg in July 1946. To that union they had a daughter, Linda. They lived in Oklahoma then moved to Spokane, MO in 1953. John passed away in 1956. She later married Robert Thomas in 1958. To that union they had a daughter, Jan.
Opal began her teaching career when she was 18 at Ironside school in Taney County, MO. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree In Education from Drury University, Opal taught at Ed V. Williams School in Springfield. She had strong work ethics as well as strong values. Opal left an impression of honesty and integrity on many people’s lives.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, her husband, John McClurg and husband, Robert Thomas. She is survived by her daughters, Linda McCurry and Jan Thomas, 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, 3 step-sons, and many other relatives.
Graveside services will be on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at 3:00 pm in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with visitation to be held one hour prior in Greenlawn Funeral Home North.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
