Rick immediately livened up our class when he joined us in 8th grade. In 9th I was fortunate to be his straight man on a school talent show comedy routine -- but we quickly realized we needed to tone it down when auditioning for our faculty review with legendary Jr High teacher Jim Decker. In high school we would see how many days in a row our mom would let us wear the same pair of jeans, and usually he won. I never saw Rick get angry with anyone. His understated sense of humor was infectious. After high school our lives took us on different paths. Approaching retirement I so hoped to spend more time and memories with Rick. He was taken from us much too soon, but the smiles he gave us will live on forever.

When Nanci’s mom (my stepmom) was dying I came east from Oregon and spent several weeks living at Nanci and Rick’s home in Virginia. It was then that I really got to know Rick. He was the perfect host, He loved to sit out on the breezeway until very late looking at the stars and talking on just about anything. We soon found that our opinions often differed, but our respect for each other only grew. And funny! We had more great laughs in the middle of that otherwise very sad time. And I learned that Rick could be hard to read., but that it was often a mask for the true depth of his feelings. I genuinely liked the guy, and I’m sure I would like his family. I send you all my heartfelt condolences and prayers.
