Ruth E. Miller (born Ruthene Cannon), age 94, of Springfield, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, September 12, 2019, 5:59 AM, at The Maples Health and Rehabilitation, Springfield.
Ruth loved to watch tennis and the news on TV; she also loved playing solitaire and Mahjong on the computer and had quite the green thumb.
Ruth was born May 23, 1925, in Manes, MO, to Elmer McKinley (Kin) Cannon and Dortha Ellen Wade Cannon. She graduated from Mountain Grove High School and Southwest Missouri State Teacher’s College, now known as Missouri State University. She began her work career teaching in a one-room school at the age of 16. She began working in 1964 as a bookkeeper at Stoddard Equipment Company in Springfield and retired in 1989. After retirement, she volunteered at Mercy Hospital in Springfield for almost 21 years. Ruth loved her friends and fellow employees at both places.
She is survived by two children, Webb Miller and wife Rita Hobson Miller of Blue Springs, MO, and Julie Miller Swadley and husband Dan Swadley of Fair Grove, MO; four grandchildren: Christina Gorsline of Oak Grove, MO, Brian Miller of Lee Summit, MO, Jason Swadley of Arlington, VA, and Jennifer Francke of Lee Summit, MO; six great grandchildren: Justice, Matthew and Nathan Gorsline, Lucas and Lillian Miller, and Javien Francke; one sister, Jane Cannon Glitch, of Woodward, Oklahoma; and many nephews and nieces. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Carl Cannon and Melvin (Pete) Cannon, and one sister: Effie Cannon Harper.
Ruth spent the last year at The Maples Health and Rehabilitation. Ruth’s family would like to thank The Maples for the great care they provided for Ruth and the many friendships she made while there.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1 PM, Friday, September 27, 2019, at Greenlawn Funeral Home North with funeral services from 1 – 2 PM. Graveside services will follow with burial at Greenlawn North.
