Velda Dean Courtney, age 87, passed away on Feb. 19, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO. Her daughters and beloved son-in law were by her side as she drew her last breath. “Dean” was born to Ernest and Flossie (Chism) Fleeman on Nov. 13, 1933 near Fair Play, MO.
She was united in marriage to Frank X. Lyman on Dec. 1, 1950 until his death in 1976. To this union three daughters were born. On April 24, 1980 she married Roy L. Courtney. They were married until his death in 2000. She is preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers; Kyle, Darrell and Gary Fleeman, her brother-in-law Dale Vance and her sister-in-law Patsy Fleeman.
She is survived by her daughters; Glenda Lyman, Linda Denny (David) and Denise Lyman. Her six grandchildren and their spouses; Travis Polodna (Laura), Danielle Swearengin (Ronald), Terah Dick (Darin), Karen Billings (Thomas), Gayle Paxson (Matt) and Anthony Ruzicka, two step-granddaughters, Lisa Fabro and Diane Enyart (Wes), 14 great-grandchildren, one step-great granddaughter and three step-great grandsons and two step-great, great grandsons. Her sister, Velma Vance as well as her sister-in-law Joetta Fleeman, several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
“Mom” loved her family beyond all else. She often remarked to us girls, how “we were her life”. Mom spent many summers camping and fishing at Stockton Lake. She and Velma were often seen pedaling in their pedal boat into the coves looking for fish. She loved to fish! She loved to travel in her motor home. She also loved her trip to Barbados with her daughters and her cruise to the Bahamas.
A private service by invitation will be held under the care of Greenlawn Funeral Home South. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to; Routh Chapel Cemetery, in care of Marilyn Anderson 4050 W. Bogard Street, Springfield, MO 65802 in memory of Velda.
