Albert “Wayne” Auston, 92 of Springfield, Missouri passed away Friday, March 17, 2023 at 5:25 a.m. at Springfield Rehabilitation Health Care Center. He was born September 19, 1930 in Clayhatchee, Alabama. He graduated high school with a GED and enrolled in the Army. In 1962 Wayne started work in civil service for the Army Reserve Unit managing their payroll. He was also active in the Army Reserve with the rank of Master Sargent. He retired from both in October 1990. During his career, he served briefly in the United States Air Force and was a Korean War Veteran.
Wayne met the love of his life Anna “Blue Eyes” Mae Cates at a USO dance in Springfield, Missouri. After a short courtship they were married on January 18, 1953 and remained married for 58 years before his “Blue Eyes” passed in 2011. Wayne enjoyed following Alabama Crimson Tide football, St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball, watching Western movies and spending time with his family. Wayne also found great pleasure tending to his rose bushes and bringing roses to those at Mercy Villa who cared for his wife, Anna.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, his parents and eight brothers and sisters, and one step-granddaughter.
Wayne is survived by his son David and his wife Pat Auston, daughter Cyndi Auston Cusick and her husband Tom and son Michael Auston. He is also survived by two granddaughters, four step-grandsons, three step-granddaughters, three great grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren. Wayne was also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Greenlawn South Funeral Home followed by services at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southwest Missouri Chapter.
