William James (Bill) Sampson was born January 24, 1975 in Rolla, Missouri. He passed away Saturday evening of January 8, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He grew up in Franklin County, Missouri graduating from Union High School in 1994.
In 2014, he moved to Springfield, Missouri and was employed by SWI Industrial Solutions. Bill received wonderful support and care from Easter Seals Midwest in Springfield. He is survived by his parents, Gary and Catherine Sampson of Branson, Missouri; his sister Mary Catherine Sampson of Estes Park, Colorado; He is also survived by a host of other relatives. He was preceded in his passing by both paternal and maternal grandparents and numerous great aunts and uncles, aunts and uncles and cousins.
Bill loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and was a season ticket holder for the Springfield Cardinals as well. He also loved country music and frequently attended concerts. He had a number of other hobbies including fishing, and he looked forward to the Annual Crappie-thon at the Lake of the Ozarks with his dad and long time family friends.
Bill loved to be with people and was very adventurous. He was always ready to try exotic foods including yak! Bill was active in the Special Olympics for 28 years. During that time he played soccer, basketball, softball, track and field, bowling, golf, flag football and swimming. Bill participated at all levels and was awarded a host of medals, including, many gold.
His unified soccer team from Union, Missouri participated in the Special Olympics World Games held in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1999. Since moving to Springfield, he became an ambassador for the Special Olympics, frequently making speeches to Student Counsels and local businesses to promote the program. In 2019- 2020 he served on the committee promoting the “Polar Plunge” event in Springfield which is their main fundraiser. Special Olympics was such a wonderful opportunity for him and he was very much looking forward to the 2022 Season.
