Betty Jeanne (Samms) Jones, 94, a long-time resident of Springfield, Missouri, died at The Waterford Senior Living Center after living a fulfilled life.
Born August 30, 1919, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, she was the daughter of George and Edna Samms. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Glen M. Jones, who passed away in Dallas in 1996. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Robert Samms, who were both veterans of WW II.
Betty graduated from Central High School where she excelled academically, won a state debating championship, and was a member of the Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps. After high school, she graduated from Draughon’s Business College and became a medical secretary prior to starting her family. She was also a long-time member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
During their 55 year marriage, Betty and Glen were blessed with three sons. The Jones family lived in many different states due to Glen’s position with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. They ended up settling in Dallas and lived there for many years; then Betty moved back to Springfield in 2002. They made many close lifetime friends around the country. Upon retirement, they enjoyed traveling and went on an around-the-world tour.
Betty was a woman of many talents. She was a wonderful cook and baker, an accomplished bridge player, and a stained glass artist. She was also a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother, and truly enjoyed their visits.
She is survived by her three sons and their wives; Robert and Sue Jones, Jim and June Jones, and Tom and Jayne Jones. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty enjoyed the love of her family and she will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at The Waterford on Saturday, November 9, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Springfield’s Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
