Winfred L. Short, 82, passed away on the evening of June 9, 2015.
Winfred was born in the Township of Union, Barton County, Missouri. He graduated from Bronaugh High School, Bronaugh, Missouri, Class of 1951. Before going into the military, he worked with his brothers in their father’s blacksmith and welding shop in Bronaugh. Winfred served in the United States Army during the Korean War from March 10, 1953 to December 23, 1954. Winfred married E. Maxine Buchanan on March 4, 1956 and moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Winfred first worked as a welder, then as a supervisor for Kenworth/Dart, a division of PACCAR, Inc. until moving to Springfield, Missouri in the early 1980s. Both he and his wife, along with their son, owned and operated Travelers Park Campground.
Winfred, along with his wife and son, moved from Travelers Park Campground to the farm in Fair Grove, Missouri in January 2006 after they sold the campground. They took on the new business of a cow/calf operation. He and Maxine enjoyed feeding and watching the wildlife that were frequent visitors to their property.
Winfred was preceded in death by his wife, E. Maxine (Buchanan) Short; his parents, Liel W. Short and Katie (Bewley) Short; four sisters – Wretha V. Short, Oleta (Short) Webb, Fern (Short) Yokley, and Kathleen (Short) Gibson; three brothers – Harry A. Short, Warren A. Short, and Merl Lee Short.
He is survived by his sister, Irma Jean Hudson and brother, Howard D. Short; his son – Steve Short; his daughter – Connie (Short) Mahowald (Joe Mahowald); four grandchildren – Samantha, Luke, Nathan, and Paul Mahowald.
A visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East in Springfield, Missouri. Burial will be at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, MO with military honors following the service.
