Larry Dean Hedgpeth, 76, born to his mother and father, Martha Emogene (Bumgarner) and Ivan Earl Hedgpeth passed away in his home on Saturday, April 1st, 2023. Larry grew up on a dairy farm where he worked with his four siblings, Mary Hedgpeth Eakins (Richard Eakins), Charles Hedgpeth (Carol Schlafley), David Hedgpeth (Kathy Frasier) and Roger Hedgpeth (Peggy Dawson). Larry served in the Army in Viet Nam from 1967-1969.
In 1967, Larry married Peggy McIlroy. In 1968, their first child, Kimberly Hedgpeth was born. After the birth of Kim and the end of Larry’s deployment, they returned to Springfield where they had twin sons, Kinley and Kevin Hedgpeth. Larry worked as General Manager of Don Wessel Oldsmobile Honda. He then opened several Springfield stores called Designer Outlet.
Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Hedgpeth, daughter Kim Hedgpeth, daughter in law, Janet Crews, and the joy of his life, 18 year old granddaughter, Kylen Crews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother David Hedgpeth, and both of his twin sons, Kevin and Kinley Hedgpeth.
Larry was a very generous, kind, and giving man. He loved his dogs, golf, repairing anything mechanical, astronomy, and his family. He generously gave of his time and money to anyone in need. He was known to pick up veterans on the side of rainy roads and set them up in a hotel. He often bought and distributed sandwiches and waters for the unhoused. He taught his children to be equally caring and generous. Mostly, Larry adored his family and especially his beloved granddaughter, Kylen. She brought him so much joy, energy and playfulness. It is comforting to know that he now walks with his sons, brother, parents, and especially our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Services for Larry will be at 3:00 pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home East on Thursday April 6th. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 3:00 pm on the same date. There will be a private family internment at the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
