Ruby Jewel White passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, in Battlefield, Missouri, at the age of 94. Born on January 23, 1930, in Springfield, Missouri, Ruby was the daughter of Hosea Columbus Pfeifer and Rachel Caldwell Pfeifer.
Ruby’s primary education began at Pepperdine Elementary, continued at Reed Junior High, and she later attended Springfield Senior High School. As a child, Ruby and her sister Margie, would walk from their home on Commercial Street to Boulevard Baptist Church to attend services. Ruby made a profession of faith through the ministry of Boulevard.
Ruby married Wallace Hough in 1948, and four children were born to this union. She and Wallace owned and operated Hough’s Market for decades serving the northside Springfield community. As Wallace’s health declined, the store was sold and Ruby worked as a teller at Commerce Bank until her retirement. Ruby spent several years traveling throughout North America by RV, and for several years wintered in Corpus Christi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth Pratt; brother, Hosea C Pfeifer, Jr.; sister, Margie Crocker; and husbands: Wallace Dean Hough, Eugene Henderson, and Stanford White. She is survived by her son, Wally Hough and wife Jill; daughter, Rachel Kay Mills; son, David Hough and wife Linda; daughter, Cindy and husband Steve Brown; and grandchildren: Griffin Hough, Tim Bristow, Jennifer Stevens, Olivia Hough, Landon Hough, Lincoln Hough, Lyon Hough, Andy Brown, Natalie Kendrick, and Alex Brown. Ruby had eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren at last count.
The family is deeply grateful for the care and compassion shown by the staff of the Township Assisted Living, and Seasons Hospice. Thank you for your support, care, kind words, prayers, and love throughout a challenging journey.
A graveside service is planned for the family at 3:30 pm, Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, where loved ones will gather to honor Ruby’s life and celebrate shared memories.
Arrangements are under the compassionate direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home North in Springfield, Missouri.
