After a difficult 23 days, Roy Melvin Crossland, left his earthly body on
February 1, 2025. This kind, clever, friendly man, took his last breath in
the presence of his daughters, Connie and Renee’.
Roy was the first born of Granville Solomon Crossland and Pearl
(Graves) Crossland Logsdon, November 25, 1931 in Bloodland, MO. In
the years that followed he was joined by 5 brothers. The boys became
the source of many stories that their families have enjoyed hearing
through the years. Most of the stories revolved around Roy stepping in
to keep his brothers out of trouble. Or, as Roy would say, “as I
remember it.”
Roy and Evelyn Anderson eloped on August 1 st , 1952 and settled in
Nevada, MO. They were married 64 years at the time of her death in
2016. They had 3 children, Connie, Doug and Renee’.
Roy proudly served for 41 years in the MO Army National Guard. He
joined November of 1950 and retired in October of 1991. He started
the Guards in Nevada, MO and was then transferred to Springfield, MO
in 1958 to oversee the motor pool. He retired as a Chief Warrant
Officer 4. After retirement, he went to work for South Haven Baptist
Church, Springfield, MO in charge of maintenance/custodial/lawn care.
He took pride in the church lawn and building. He actually liked
cleaning up glitter because he knew it meant the kids had a good time.
He worked hard all of his life to provide for his parents, siblings, wife,
and children. He would work several extra jobs to help support the
family.
He had a beautiful voice and sang in quartets and musicals during high
school. Later he would go on to lead music at several churches and
revivals in the Nevada, MO and the Springfield area.
One of Roy’s passions was woodworking, it was therapy for him. He
often said he loved to take big pieces of wood and make little pieces.
He especially loved to make bird houses with all kinds of things. The
most unique was when he took parts from an old piano and created
bird house that looked like churches.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Pearl, his son, Douglas
Roy Crossland, his parents, his step-father, Kenneth Logsdon, his
brothers, Joe, Larry, Lee and Norman Logsdon, a niece, Joy Elaine
Crossland, a nephew, Mike Crossland and a great niece, Desirae
Crossland.
He is survived by his daughters, Connie Henson, Renee’ Hunt (George).
Grandchildren, Alesha Henson, Seth Hunt (Tim), Sydney Hunt and
Shannon Bambery and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2
brothers, Jack Crossland and Les Crossland, several nieces and nephews
and great nieces and nephews.
