It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Dodson Viefhaus, affectionately known as JD. JD was born on September 12, 1946, in Tulsa, OK, and he journeyed through life with a spirit as vibrant as his many adventures. On June 29, 2025, JD left us to join those who have gone before him, leaving an indelible mark on all of us who had the privilege to know him.
A proud veteran, JD dedicated 24 honorable years to the United States Army, a service he cherished deep in his soul. After his time in the military, he settled into a life of entrepreneurship, first running his own lawn mower sale and repair business, Roto-Cat. But perhaps what brought him the most joy was owning and operating the Kad-E Korner Convenience Store and Deli, where he created a welcoming haven for the community, sharing smiles and stories along the way.
JD’s greatest treasure was his love for his sweetheart, Coleen Fay Greene. United in marriage on November 25, 1977, they shared an incredible 47 years of laughter, love, and adventures. They were truly each other’s rock, navigating the ups and downs of life together and filling it with unforgettable memories.
In his downtime, JD was frequently found cruising the open roads on his beloved Harley trike. He had a knack for discovering all kinds of interesting gadgets, often indulging in shopping sprees on Temu. Above all, JD held a special place in his heart for animals, as evidenced by the five beloved rescue dogs who were fortunate enough to own him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Henry Viefhaus and Faye J. Smith and two sisters Judy Vernon and Jane Pleasant.
JD leaves behind his adoring wife, Coleen; his three cherished sons, James D. Viefhaus, Jr., Joe D. Viefhaus, and Tai Ly; his half-sister, Zoe Metzger; and his half-brother, Fred Viefhaus. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The love he leaves behind is immeasurable, and he will forever be missed.
Family and friends will gather for a funeral service at Greenlawn Funeral Home, North on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 11:30 AM, preceded by a visitation at 10:30 AM. Following the service, we will lay JD to rest at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of JD to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri: 3161 W. Norton Rd., Springfield, MO 65803 or left in care of the funeral home.
Join us as we celebrate the life of a man who embraced every moment with compassion, laughter, and joy. JD’s spirit will live on in our hearts and memories.
