Larry Hilton Jones was born on March 25, 1947 in rural Springfield to Stanley Kenneth Jones and Lodene (Hilton) Jones and entered Heaven’s Gates on June 20, 2026 due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease.
Larry spent his entire life in Western Greene County. In the 1950’s Stanley and Lodene moved to a dairy near Ash Grove where Larry attended high school through his sophomore year. Larry continued to cherish his time and friendships from the years in Ash Grove. After graduating from Glendale High School, Larry attended Graff Vo-Tech (now OTC) to earn an associates in electrical technology. Larry met Linda Hurd (a Rogersville girl) in 1965 and married in 1967. By 1972, they had built a house and returned to the farm that his great-grandparents had purchased in 1901.
His great-grandfather (Samuel Thomas Hilton) and grandfather (George “Raymond” Hilton) farmed the same land Larry spent so many years working and building a life on. He was concerned with conservation and being a good steward of our natural resources. Larry spent 18 years on the Greene County Soil and Water Conservation Committee and countless hours focused on their work to preserve rural Greene County.
He loved the farm, raising alfalfa hay and Simmental cattle. He was instrumental in organizing and forming the first Simmental Cattle Organization of the Ozarks serving as the first President for many years promoting the breed.
Following graduation from Graff he was hired at City Utilities of Springfield where he worked for 38 years, initially working in the electric line department and then the meter shop where he retired. Larry continued working with City Utilities after retirement focusing on energy conservation and special projects.
Larry was a faithful and active member (serving in various roles) of Hood United Methodist Church in Republic for a number of years, during this time he made a number of life-long friends. More recently Larry and Linda had been attending National Avenue Christian Church.
Larry was a wonderful man who was always willing to stop what he was doing to help friends and neighbors when in need (no matter the time of day or weather conditions) he was the first to lend a helping hand. His big smile and gentle touch will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Lodene and Stanley Jones, his in-laws, Emmagene and Rev. Garnie Hurd, niece Melissa (Hurd) Montgomery, and sister-in-law, Joyce (Smith) Hurd.
Larry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda (Hurd) Jones, son Scott Jones, brother-in-law Allen Hurd, niece Alana Hurd, and nephew Jeffrey Montgomery.
Larry’s family wishes to extend appreciation to all who have offered comfort and support during this difficult time and a special thanks to the staff at the Manor at Elfindale for their kind and loving support to Larry and Linda.
Visitation will be held at Greenlawn South at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The funeral service will start at 11 a.m. after the visitation, with the burial immediately following at Clear Creek Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Paula Kindrick Hartsfield of Grace Episcopal Church (Jefferson City) Celebrant.
