Albert Lee “Butch” Haymes, Jr departed this life peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Savanna House Memory Care Facility in Gilbert, AZ at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 4 days from Lewy Body Dementia.
He was born December 2, 1940 near Marshfield, MO to Albert Lee Haymes, Sr. and Mariah Jane “Janie” Haymes. Albert graduated from Central High School, Springfield, MO in 1958 and then entered the United States Army where he proudly served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne Unit until 1962. After returning home, Albert and his forever love Joyce Lynn Shaffer, who had faithfully written him weekly letters while deployed, married on December 15, 1962 in Springfield, MO. From this union they were blessed to have four children and the couple was able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in Arizona with the family present.
Albert spent his career working at the Springfield Fire Department for 28 years serving as a Battalion Chief upon his retirement in 1993. Albert, always ready for a money-making opportunity, encouraged Joyce to join him in varied side endeavors while working at the fire department Most notably they owned and operated B&J Interior Designs making and installing custom window treatments for many years. Albert and Joyce spent their entire married life in the Springfield, Elkland, and Nixa, MO. areas until a year ago, when they moved to Gilbert, AZ to get assistance caring for Albert. At the time of his death, Albert was a member of South Gate Baptist Church in Springfield, MO but spent many years serving and teaching at North Nixa Baptist Church in Nixa, MO and Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield, MO. He will always be remembered as a story teller with a soft heart, large personality and funny t-shirts.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Albert Lee, Sr. and Janie Haymes; stillborn daughter Tracie Michelle Haymes; brothers James Ivan Haymes, Charles Edward Haymes; sisters Margaret Lee Schultz, Betty Lou Haymes, Norma Jane McQueen, Rosa Mae Benskin, and Irma Sue Haymes.
Survivors include his wife Joyce Haymes; daughters Lori Clark and husband James of Gilbert, AZ, Sandi Zwingle and husband Kevin of Nixa, MO, and son David Haymes and wife Jennie of Springfield, MO. Sisters Mary Mitchell, Sharon Smith, Dorothy Conway, Dianna Lowry, and Amy Jo Youngblood. Grandchildren, Ashli Morgan and husband Eric, Krista Kilian and husband Caleb, Jacob Clark and wife Anna, Peyton Goodman and husband Derrick, Zack Zwingle, Samantha Lott and husband Patrick, Joe Haymes and wife Gracie. Great grandchildren that always made him smile, Jet Morgan, Chloe Kilian, Ellie Clark, Olen Lott and Hazel Lott; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held at Greenlawn (North) Funeral Home at 10:00am on Friday, July 21, 2023 with a graveside service and military honors immediately following. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Springfield, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) at https://www.lbda.org/donate.
