God called an angel home Friday, Sept. 16. Barbara Ann (McGilvry) Phillips, 79, didn’t go easy. She survived two open-heart surgeries and multiple complications to remain with her devoted family. She was their matriarch, their role model, and their spiritual leader.
Born Jan. 3, 1943 to Mary Elizabeth and Robert J. McGilvry Jr., Barbara was a lifelong Christian who graduated from Central High School in 1961.
Barbara met her beloved husband Larry when his brother Chuck married her sister Linda. Barbara and Larry celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on May 19. Members of Boulevard Baptist Church throughout their marriage, their greatest joy came from their three boys — Danny, Mark, and Phil. Tales of the boys’ mischief and kindness circulated at all family gatherings, which often included friends of each son. Barbara welcomed and fed all who gathered, frequently remarking that she had far more than three sons!
Barbara had a distinctive heartbeat due to a congenital heart murmur. She delighted in seeing her doctors’ panic as they listened to the loud, irregular heartbeat the first time! That heartbeat resounded with love for her family, who marveled at Barbara’s strength and calm acceptance of each medical setback. She never complained or lost her patience, a marvel to her devoted caregivers.
In addition to her beloved husband Larry, Barbara is survived by sons Danny, Springfield, and Mark and his wife Alyssa, Republic; stepson Phil Phillips, Bolivar; sister Linda Floyd and her husband John, Marshfield; niece Belinda Banta and her husband Eric, Ozark; grandchildren Madi and Jack Phillips, and Steven Phillips and his wife Melody, all of Republic; great-niece Elizabeth Banta, Ozark; her Boulevard Baptist Church family; and many long-time friends.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, also at Greenlawn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boulevard Baptist Church, 1030 S. Eastgate Avenue, Springfield, 65809.
