Charles Junior Dykes, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather rode off into the sunset on December 21, 2023, at the age of 94 in the Missouri Veteran’s Home, Mt. Vernon, Missouri.
Born on July 8, 1929, to Charles Warren and Mary Ethel (Gasperson) Dykes in the small town of Strafford, Missouri. Junior’s life was deeply intertwined with his love for horses and cowboy spirit. From a young age, he dedicated himself to the art of horse training, becoming a renowned expert in his field. Junior’s remarkable skills and unwavering passion for his work earned him a special place in the hearts of all who knew him. He could regularly be found with his ten-gallon hat and boots. He enlisted with the United States Marine Corp and served till his honorable discharge.
On September 18, 1947, Junior embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship, marrying his beloved Mildred Dykes. Together, they created a loving home and were blessed with five beautiful children – Carol, Linda, Sharon, Dennis, and Diana. As a devoted and nurturing father, Junior was always there to guide and support his children, sharing not only his wisdom but also his infectious sense of humor.
Aside from his equestrian pursuits, Junior established and operated The Ozarks Salvage Pull for an impressive four decades. His dedication and strong work ethic were evident in the success of his business, becoming a respected figure within the community.
An unwavering believer in the power of faith, Junior found solace and inspiration through his attendance at the Cowboy Church in Springfield. His deep connection to the Lord shaped his character and guided his actions, leaving a lasting impact on all those fortunate enough to have been in his presence.
Junior was preceded by his parents; two daughters, Carol Staffords and Diana Dykes; two grandchildren, Jamie Thompson and Destiny Dykes; two sons in law, Rick Nichols and Larry Willoughby; four brothers, Sammy, Melvin, Lloyd, and Robert; a sister, Pauline McNurlin; and his best friend of 70 years, Troy Maples.
Junior’s memory will forever live on within the hearts of all who were fortunate to have known him. He is survived by two of his daughters, Linda Nichols and Sharon Willoughby; his son, Dennis Dykes; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jimmy and Robyn Thomas, Heather and Scott Forrest, Todd Ray, Mark Ray and Chrissy Cummings, and Kim and Chris Robinson; numerous great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other family members and friends. May his soul find eternal peace, his legacy continue to inspire, and his love be felt for generations to come.
The family will receive visitors in Greenlawn Funeral Home, North on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023, beginning at 11:00 am, also in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield with full military honors.
