Folk rock music legend, beloved Partner, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend to hundreds, and half of the duo Brewer & Shipley of “One Toke Over The Line” fame, Michael Brewer has reunited with the Great Spirit at the age of 80. He was the “center of the union,” drawing people together throughout his lifetime. As a charismatic stage performer, he drew fans together from all over the world. His music touched so many generations, from his rebellious and politically relevant songs of the 1960s to his optimistic ballads through recent years. He never stopped writing and making music.
Michael was born in Oklahoma City, OK, in 1944 to Charles Brewer Jr. and Mary Margaret Brewer. His mother was a piano teacher, and he learned to play and sing as soon as he could walk. The first-born child of four, the family was full of music, and the siblings wrote and played together throughout their lives.
Michael and Sandra Boyd Brewer had two daughters, Carrie Smith and Sarah Brewer.
Michael met his soul mate Scarlett Cameron in Branson, MO, in 1987. They were deeply in love and never parted until the day he died.
Scarlett’s daughters, Tara Cameron Winker and Suzy Cameron, and niece Leigh Bodenheimer, became daughters to him as well. Michael also became “MichaelPa” to grandchildren Jolie Hughes, Matthew Browning, Sam Browning, Marret Lineberry, and great-grandson Teddy Hughes. To his one biological grandchild, Kalen Steffensen, he was “Granddad.”
Michael is also survived by his sister Charla Brown, brother Keith Brewer, nephews Zak Knight, Beau Brown, Ian Hajizadeh and Wyatt Brewer, and great-niece Crystal Knight. His parents Charles Brewer Jr. and Mary Margaret Brewer, sister Hali Khan and his brother Timothy Brewer preceded him in death.
The undying devotion and respect of his fans was a part of his soul, and they honored by him. He always said, “The traveling is hell, and the audience is Heaven.” Michael loved and touched the lives of countless others who were close to his heart.
Everyone Michael loved in his life knew it without a doubt. He never missed an opportunity to say, “I love you,” with warm, genuine affection. He always had a smile and a kind word for a stranger. Charla and Keith said he was the best brother anyone could ever ask for. He was the kindest, most caring man, and many will truly miss him. The celebration of his life will be May 24, 2025, at Scarlett’s Mountain in Powersite, MO.
When asked “Do you have any questions?” he always answered “What’s the meaning of Life?” Now he knows.
Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home in Branson.
