Denys Ray Hansen, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and coach passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on April 10, 1947, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, Denys dedicated his life to education and nurturing the potential in young minds. A graduate of Central High School, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University – an achievement that reflected his deep commitment to personal growth and learning.
Denys devoted his professional career to teaching Business at Hillcrest High School, where he not only educated but also mentored countless students. His greatest joy as an educator came from coaching high school soccer, where he built more than athletes – he built confident, young teenagers to be grounded in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Whether on the sidelines or in the stands, Denys was a constant presence at Hillcrest athletic events, proudly cheering on his students in every sport and embodying the true spirit of the Hornet family.
Outside the classroom and sports stadiums, Denys had many interests that reflected his adventurous spirit and craftsmanship. He loved working on cars, often spending hours in his garage, breathing new life into automobiles. He was also an avid off-roader, enjoying countless weekends exploring trails in Missouri and Arkansas with friends – always ready for the next challenge and camaraderie it brought.
Denys is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christie Hansen; two sons, Kurt Hansen and Nick Hansen (Melissa Cox); his brother, Jim Hansen (Susan); three grandchildren, Justin Hansen (Mariah), Emelia Hansen and Ian Hansen; and four great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Olivia, Chloe, and Maisie.
Denys was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elloine Hansen, and his brother, Byron Hansen.
Cremation services are under the care of Greenlawn Funeral Home North. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the ALS Association (www.als.org) in Denys’ honor.
