Denzil Lee Owen was born on June 20, 1934, in Goodhope, Missouri. Right from the start, his life was full of surprises. The doctor mistakenly recorded his birthday as June 21 and, mishearing his name, thought his parents said “Denzilee.” Believing they’d forgotten a middle name, he added “Edward” (after himself). Times were different in 1934, so, as a result, Denzil’s legal name became Denzilee Edward Owen—a charming mix-up that would become a family favorite story.
Denzil was the beloved son of Willam James and Belva Mae Owen and cherished sibling to his sister, Ella Rae Harris. He grew up on his family farm where he learned the value of hard work.
On 03/28/1954, Denzil married Nora Mae, with whom he shared three children: Gary, Gay Lynn and Gregory.
Later in life, he married Sherry on July 3, 1985 with their two sons, Drew and Grant. Together, they created a loving blended family, adding Virginia, Michael and Zachary to the fold. They enjoyed raising a big family, which has since blossomed into a legacy of 39 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, ranging from 6 months to 42 years old.
Denzil loved family, flying airplanes, playing golf and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs. Even after retiring at 65, he kept working part-time, remaining active and purposeful until his final days.
He lived a life full of love for Jehovah. He cherished opportunities to share the Bible’s message and serve his congregation. Denzil held firmly the hope of the resurrection promised in John 5: 28,29 and looked forward to living forever in paradise. His family and friends eagerly await the day when they will welcome him back in open arms.
A memorial service for Denzil will be at 3:00 pm Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East.
