Doris Evelyn Swearengin Batzel Iorg was born on April 26 th 1926 to William Almus and Golda Eloise Swearengin, at the family home in Elkhead, Missouri, and passed from this life February 18 th, 2024, at Woodland Manor Nursing Home, Springfield, Missouri, following a short illness.
She grew up the middle child of two sisters in the Christian County area of Elkhead, Missouri, during the Great Depression. She always said, “We didn’t know we were poor, because everyone we knew was in the same boat, but we knew we were loved and that helped us kids get through.” Doris attended elementary school at the two room Red Oak School, at Elkhead. She attended Ava High School, in Ava, Missouri, graduating in 1944.
After graduation, she moved to Springfield, Missouri, where she worked numerous jobs throughout her work life, none meaning as much to her as being a floral designer for nearly fifty years. Doris loved flowers, and her work was so exquisite that customers followed her from flower shop to flower shop, wherever she was working, forming many long-time friendships. She even took special requests from some of those customers after retiring from the floral industry, including doing all the flowers for a large wedding.
No matter where Doris worked, she was well liked by everyone. Not many can say they never had an enemy, but according to her daughter, Marilyn, this was very true, which was apparent with over 100 friends and family sending her Christmas and birthday cards every year.
On July 8, 1945, she married Sergeant Irvin L. Batzel, who was serving in the United States Army, when they married. They shared 61 years together until his passing September 24 th, 2006. To this union two daughters were born, Carolyn Jeanette, and Marilyn Annette.
On August 19th, 2008, Doris married William Clyde Iorg. They were married 9-years until his death, August 25 th, 2017.
In addition to Irvin and Clyde, Doris was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Barnes, Son-In-Law: Jimmie Barnes, her parents, and a sister, Dorene Shortt, and a niece Sandra Weter. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Marilyn and Roger Ison, grandchildren, Clarindia and Darrell Barnes, and Brian Ison and wife, Tracy. She is survived by one great-grandchild, Lauren Barnes, a sister, Dortheta Stracke, and a host of nieces, nephews, and many cousins, a long-time friend, Donna Baucom and many, many other good friends.
Visitation will be Monday, February 26, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the funeral home. There will be a private family Graveside Service at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fair Haven Children’s Home, 3132 North Fair Haven Loop, Strafford, MO. 65757, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
