Dorothy J. “Dortie” Swantner died Friday, May 23 at Springfield Rehab and Health Care. She was born June 19, 1923 in Springfield, the youngest daughter of Jack and Stella (Walker) Ruyle. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1941 and began work as a clerk at Berman’s Jewelry. It was there she met Edward “Stormy” Swantner when he brought his railroad watch in for repair. They were married July 21, 1942 in Ozark, Missouri. They shared over 66 years of marriage, which included his job-related moves to several Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma cities. She always made a comfortable welcoming home wherever they lived. She worked in jewelry stores during holidays and later managed trading stamp redemption centers in Oklahoma and Missouri. She also worked for several years as a receptionist/bookkeeper for Dr. Malcolm Snell. Dortie was life member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a choir member and church office volunteer at St. Agnes Cathedral. She was happiest when she was feeding people, and people were happiest when she was feeding them her signature meatloaf, pound cake, or peach cobbler. Her fruitcakes were always welcome Christmas gifts. Dortie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stormy, and her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Frances and O.B. Shipman. She is survived by her daughter, Darinda Messer and her husband, John of Lawrence, Kansas; granddaughter Jill Nuti and her husband, Mike of Danville, California; grandson, Michael Messer and his fiancé, Tina Clark of Phoenix, Arizona; great-grandchildren Karissa Nuti and Jake Nuti; also of Danville. She is also survived by nephews Jack Shipman and his wife Carol of Lawrence, Kansas; and Jerry Shipman and his wife Judy of Atlanta, Georgia. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. Other survivors are her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patricia and Don Baker of Newburg, Missouri.Visitation is planned for Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Greenlawn Funeral Home South from 6-8 PM. The funeral mass will be Monday, June 2, at 10 AM at St. Agnes Cathedral.
