With a heavy heart but a spirit of celebration we announce the passing of Gary Leon Highbarger. Gary passed from this life on June 6, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born on July 10, 1944, in Kansas City, KS, while his father built airplanes during World War II.
Gary was a cherished husband, father, friend, and Christian whose legacy will live on in the hearts of the many people he touched throughout his life.
Gary enlisted to serve his country in the U.S. Navy from May 6, 1963, to April 12, 1965, achieving the rank of Seaman Apprentice. He served on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Hancock during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he served as a police officer with the Springfield Police Department. He served his community as a patrolmen, traffic scene investigator, motorcycle officer, and competed with the pistol team. He had passed his sergeant qualifications shortly before his disability retirement caused by an injury while on duty. He served with honor and integrity.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Marti Highbarger; his two daughters, Tammy Highbarger and Toni Pope and husband Kyle; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren;2 great-great- grandchildren; his brother, Johnnie Highbarger and wife Donna; and a host of other family and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Harmon and Marie Highbarger.
His family will forever cherish the love, laughter, and special moments they shared.
Gary was known for his adventurous spirit, enjoying activities like, camping, hunting, shooting, and relishing the simple pleasures of life. He always had his A&W Root Beer (and M&M’s whenever he could get them).
He was a devoted member of East Grand Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for 23 years. He participated in 9 medical mission trips to Nicaragua. He was an active participant in the Billings Gun Club, where he formed lasting friendships with fellow enthusiasts.
In honor of Gary’s life, the community will gather for a Celebration of Gary’s life at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2025, at Greenlawn East Funeral Home, with a graveside service at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield at 1:00 p.m., where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
Family and friends are invited to share memories during a visitation at Greenlawn Funeral Home East on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 5-7 p.m.
As we celebrate the life of Gary Leon Highbarger, let us remember his laughter, his love for life, and the indelible mark he has left on all who knew him. His spirit will forever illuminate our memories.
