George David Connor, age 98, of Springfield Missouri passed Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Born October 30, 1924 to Laurence H. and Doris Connor of McMechen WV. George was a proud Veteran having enlisted into the United States Navy in 1942. He served continually for 31 years as a flight engineer, aircrewman and aircraft mechanic. During his 31 years of service to his country he earned multiple commendations some of which included The World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Joint Service Medal. Bestowed to very few he also earned the Antarctic Service Medal for supporting research activities at the South Pole and Combat Action Ribbon. Upon retiring in 1973 George had attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his retirement from the Navy, George earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maryland and a PHD in Management from Pacific Western University. This led him to work for airline giants McDonnell Douglas and Embraer.
During his service he was a part of the Taiwan Defense Command where he met his dear friend Raymond Johns and the love of his life, Lan. They were married in 1975 and remained devoted to each other until George’s passing. George loved traveling the world with his wife Lan. This love of travel led them to live in places like Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Brazil where they would later adopt their son Patrick. George and Patrick shared a love for St Louis Cardinals baseball and saw them win the 2006 World Series at the new Busch Stadium.
George is survived by his wife Lan and son Patrick Connor, of Springfield MO; sister Diana Connor(Melvin “Frank” Mitchell), of Hagerstown, Maryland; nieces Sandra Connor-Kidder and Jeanie Connor Mason; nephews Jerry Connor(Carol), Craig Mitchell, Brett Mitchell, and Chad Mitchell; and countless grandnieces and grandnephews. Roger and Cindy Lin, parents to Chialee, Chris and Randy Lin (Huntington Beach CA)
He was proceeded in death by his parents Laurence H. and Doris Connor, his brothers Lawrence, Marvin, Irvin, sister-in-law Catherine, nephew Larry and brother-in-law Frank Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in the name of George Connor to The Wounded Warriors Project would be appreciated. This cause was near and dear to his heart. He was so honored to serve his country and always wanted to make sure our service men and women are and will always be taken care of.
