George Rushing, 93, of Ozark, Missouri, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025. Born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 31, 1931 to Sarah Louise (née Henley) and George Emmett Rushing and the oldest of five children, he lived a long and fulfilling life marked by his deep faith, hard work, and love for his family.
George served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged from service in 1955, with the rank of Corporal.
George was married to Janice Rushing-Sachs, and in this union, George was father to Brian Lee, Aaron Keith, Wesley Joel, Joy Shalom, and Steven Bishop. Friends from church called him Abraham because of him having children for the first time so late in life/older age. He cared deeply about his children and always was an affectionate father giving hugs with loving, comforting and supportive advice. Later in life, he was married to Katherine Rushing. Kathy took exceptional full-time care of George when his health started to change. George and the family have been blessed to have Kathy and all she has done to care for him. George was beyond happy with her and his life these past 20 years. They celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary just a few days before George was admitted to the hospital. Family was very important to George and his stories and pictures were often filled with pride and happy times together. He also had a host of friends with whom he enjoyed dinners or social gatherings. He remained in touch with his high school graduating classmates until the end.
He was a devoted Christian and his faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in all that he did. He loved the Lord and re-dedicated his life to Christ in late 1970. He assisted in the baptism of his daughter and was re-baptized himself at the same time. He enjoyed participating in various roles in the church, hosting fellowship events in his home, and sharing his love and joy for his faith with others – family, friends, and strangers. He participated in several church communities over the years, expanding his circle of friends each time. He had a very good singing voice, baritone tone and he was in a gospel quartet during college in Memphis, TN. He knew Elvis Presley, being they attended the same school, and loved Mr. Presley’s songs.
George was a salesman, the same career his father retired from. He worked a short time for Sherman Williams and later worked for Glidden Paint Co. where he retired after 31 years. He was a Cracker-Jack sales representative traveling 4 days per week in 3 different states. At 63 years of age during retirement, he wanted to keep himself busy so he started a part-time job at Harter House, which he loved.
George loved sports and often knew the best players in a variety of professional and college sports. He loved to golf, and he was a great fan of the St. Louis Cardinal, Kansas Chiefs, Tennessee Volunteers. He also loved playing pool/billiards. He won a Memphis Jr. golf tournament where he went to college and he gained other trophies.
He enjoyed taking his kids to play putt-putt golf and to the driving-range when they were growing up. Stephen learned how to play golf from George and both became exceptional players. After both knee replacements and a hip replacement, George still could swing that club like a Pro, through his 60s and even 70s!
George is survived by his sisters Sarah Pyles, and Ann Thomas; his wife Kathy, of the home; his children Brian (Ronetta) and grandsons Brett and Evan Rushing, of Ozark and also granddaughter Paige (Teddy); his son Aaron and granddaughter Hannah Rushing, of Springfield; his daughter Joy Rushing-Kincheloe, of Altamonte Springs, FL; and his son Stephen (Emily) and granddaughters Olyve and Avilyn, of Springfield. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Connor Michael, Vayda Gwen and Jemma Rachelle. He was preceded in death by his father George and mother Louise Rushing, his brother James Rushing, his sister Edna Rushing , and his son Wesley Rushing.
Services for George will be at 1:00 pm Friday, February 7, 2025 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Private interment will be at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Greenlawn Funeral Home East.
