Vicki Naayem left a message on November 5, 2017:
I met Darlene on my very first day of working on the SMSU campus. I stopped at the Information Desk at the Campus Union to ask her for directions. She was very kind and friendly and helped me get to where I was going. When I stopped back by to thank her, a young foreign student, who was standing at the window and who had previously been visiting with Darlene, looked at me and said, "Do you know you have the pretty eyes?" I blushed and left abruptly. I later learned that Darlene chastised the young man for having embarrassed me. Little did she know that I was quite flattered, or that he would eventually "chase me until I caught him." After a few more "accidental" meetings on campus, we soon began dating, were married two years later, have remained married for 44 years, and have three wonderful children and a beautiful granddaughter. Not only did Darlene get me to where I was going on that special day of October 1971, but she also pointed me in the direction I would take for the rest of my life. Darlene always took credit for "introducing us," and I am so very lucky and blessed that she did. My condolences and prayers to the family for your loss of this wonderful woman. I know she is now an angel in heaven, because she did the work of an angel while on earth.

I loved talking with Darl, she was funny. She made me feel "Special". She will truly be missed. Sorry for our loss, but we have good memories to think on and for that we are thankful.
