Helen Delores Weaver, 87, of Springfield, went home to be with Her Lord and Savior on September 19, 2023. Helen was born in Neosho, MO on June 17, 1936. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Max Weaver; her son, Billy Lee Cox; her parents, Jack and Lorene Barclay; her brother, Dannie Barclay; and her mother-in-law, Mary Weaver. Helen is survived by her daughter, Sherry Carney (Mike); her daughter-in-law, Judy Cox; her brother, Steve Barclay (Ruth); her brother, Ronnie Barclay (Velma); her brothers-in-law, Mike (Karen) and Mark (Claudia) Weaver; her grandkids, Dustin Cox, Whitney Cox, Caitlin Garcia (Joshua) and Sean Carney; and her two great grandkids, Stella and Maxine Garcia; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Helen was saved at an early age and was baptized in 1961. She was a faithful member of Glendale Christian Church for almost 50 years and loved the Lord with all her heart. While she attended Glendale Christian, she was involved in their Mothers of Preschoolers program and loved working with the children. Throughout the years she enjoyed helping with the Ladies Group and volunteered to help in any area whenever needed. Helen’s early education began in Goodman, MO where she graduated from high school in 1954. Helen was a single mom of Billy, working as a secretary at The Joplin Globe when, in 1959, she met Max, the love of her life. They married that same year, soon after adding a new baby girl to the family. Her husband’s career took them on the road a lot in their early years and they lived throughout the State of Missouri. Helen worked as a secretary for Emerson Elementary School in Joplin, MO; was the manager of the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Farmington, MO; was an accounting clerk for Johnny Morris’s original Bass Pro Shops location, Secretary at the United Cerebral Palsy of Southwest Missouri offices in Springfield, MO, and finally became the office administrator and a licensed agent at Forest T. Jones Insurance in Springfield, MO, from where she retired in 1991.
From an early age, Helen was very athletic. She loved volleyball and roller skating in high school and played softball on her Church team while living in Joplin. In later years Helen enjoyed many hobbies including her new favorite sport, tennis. She and her tennis partner would go on to travel and win many tournaments. She and Max also had a love for bowling with their dear friends Jim and Jenna Hodges and
had a passion for traveling and going on grand vacations; traveling all across America, including two trips to Hawaii which they both often talked about. But most of all she loved watching her children and grandchildren grow up. She loved taking her grandkids to the park to ride their bikes or showing them how to play tennis. Helen never missed a game, concert, awards ceremony, play, or graduation; if it was important to her grandkids, it was most important to her.
Helen had a love for baking Christmas candies and breads, most famously known for her Captain Crunch Bars. It was always hard for the kids and grandkids not to find where she was hiding this before a meal started. She had a special talent when it came to making keepsakes for her family, which included quilts and childhood photo albums. But more so she had a unique and special relationship with each of her grandchildren. She had a way of making them feel seen, heard, and loved in every way. She was looking forward to spoiling her great granddaughters and loved seeing them whenever possible.
Cremation is under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Please note a celebration of life is planned for Sunday, October 1st at 2 PM at Glendale Christian Church; 2110 South Blackman Road, Springfield, MO 65809. The family has asked that memorial donations made on her behalf be forwarded to Glendale Christian Church, Springfield, MO.
