James E (Jim) Swanson passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024 at his home in Branson, MO at the age of 94. Jim was born to Howard & Grace (Sandburg) Swanson on October 13, 1929 in Moline, IL. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Jim married the love of his life, Geraldine “Gerri” Garrison 70 years ago in Illinois.
Jim taught and coached many years at both High School and College levels where his teams were conference and county champions every year, plus he took several athletes to the state and national championships. His longest career was in real estate development.
Jim was a public servant in Sterling, Il, serving as the Mayor, First School Board President and Board Chairman of numerous boards and commissions. He was extremely proud to be a recipient of the P.W. Dillon award.
Jim’s most noted service was for his friend, President Ronald Reagan. Jim was involved in his campaign as well as Reagan’s Delegate to the Republican Convention. Jim was honored to have met former Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Bush and Reagan.
Jim was an outstanding athlete holding titles and records all the way to 89 years of age. In low hurdles he had the 4th best time in the country. His true passion was golf. Over 50 years he won over 250 events and tournaments including, two State Senior titles, two State Super Senior titles, a dozen club championships, 2-time Illinois Senior Player of the Year, 3 times qualifier for USGA National Tourney and many other tournaments.
The finest moment of Jim’s life was in the early 1990’s when his wife, Gerri led him to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior. The other finest moment was when Gerri agreed to be his wife.
All who met Jim knew that he was an incredible husband, father and grandfather. He was a mentor to so many as well as very generous with his time and talents. He made everyone feel like family.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Gerri Swanson of Branson, MO; children, Catherine (Roger) Wilkens of Hudson, FL, Marcia Greer of Port Richey, FL, Cristen (Bogie) Bohinc of Branson, MO and Jennifer (Bill) White of Branson, MO, 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a brother George Swanson, brother Tom Swanson, sister Susan Stoneburg and infant grandchildren.
There are no services planned. Arrangements were under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home in Branson.
