James Stewart (“Stu”) Dunlop, 69, of Springfield, Missouri passed away on June 26, 2023 at Barnes Jewish Hospital following a short illness. Stu was born on January 3,1954 in Springfield, Missouri to Betty and James S. Dunlop, Sr.  He graduated from Parkview High School in 1972 and attended the University of Missouri – Rolla where he earned his B.S. in Engineering Management in 1976.  He received his MBA at Missouri State University.

Following college, he worked at McDonnell Douglas.  With management and marketing positions in between, Stu finally found his passion and ended his career teaching marketing for 15 years at Missouri Southern State University. Through the years, Stu was selected by his students and peers as Advisor of the Year and Professor of the Year.

Stu was an avid sportsman and a top 100 athlete in the 20th century in southwest Missouri. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and college.  As an undergrad he earned letters in football, track, and baseball receiving All-MIAA team honors three times in football and once in baseball and was an All-Conference Selection in football for three years. Following his senior year at Rolla, Stu was invited to the Chicago Bears Training Camp.  He also competed at several national tournaments in men’s fast-pitch softball and won a silver medal with Team USA in the 1983 Pan-American Games.  Still the holder of several football records at Missouri S & T, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame and the Academy of Miner Athletics.

Stu is survived by his wife Penny Clayton, two daughters, Courtney and Brittany, his brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Debbie Dunlop, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jennifer Price (Dunlop), and his three brothers, John, Jeff, and Jay Dunlop.

Stu’s family would like to extend a special thank you to those who provided a watchful eye over Stu during his final days in the hospital. You know who you are. We are also grateful for Dr. Don Myears, Dr. Dominic Meldi, and the physicians, nurses, and staff of Barnes Jewish Hospital whose exemplary care over the last several years provided new leases on life.

A funeral service and celebration of Stu’s life will be held at Drury University’s Stone Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on July 1, 2023 with private burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. Funeral services are under the care of Greenlawn Funeral Home.
