James Barron “Barry” VanHouden of Republic, Missouri passed away April 9, 2011, at the age of 63. Barry was born September 24, 1947 in Independence, Kansas to James Taylor and Nellie “Ruth” VanHouden.
He graduated from Neodesha High School in 1965. Barry served his country in Vietnam, achieving the rank of Sergeant and received the Bronze Star. Barry had a distinguished 35-plus year railroad career beginning with the Frisco Railroad and concluding with the BNSF Railroad in 2006.
Preceded in death by his parents and his infant daughter, Kimberly.
Barry is survived by his wife, Betty VanHouden of Republic, MO; brother, Dr. Charles VanHouden of Chanute, Kansas; children, Michael VanHouden of Huntsville, Alabama, Kasha Revie of Springfield, Missouri, Monica Johnson of Wichita, Kansas, Scott Ables of Springfield, Missouri, Aaron Ables of Spring, Texas, 14 grandchildren, 3 nephews and 3 nieces.
He taught us generosity and love. He taught us valor and patience. He was fearless and selfless, and was loved by all. He made our lives rich and joyful and we will always love him very much. He was the best man that we’ve ever known.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 12 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Greenlawn South. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 13 at 1 pm followed by interment at Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery.
