Joanne Ruth Ohlin, 91, Springfield, Mo., passed away January 1, 2024, at Cox South Hospital. Joanne was born to John and Esther Montag on December 13, 1932, in Oshkosh, Wis., where she was raised. She attended North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., and there she met John V. Ohlin. Joanne and John were married September 5, 1953, and shared nearly 65 years of marriage before John’s passing in 2018. The couple was blessed with three children: Cheryl Lynn, Rebecca JoAnne, and Jodi Renee.
Joanne served as a pastor’s wife and Sunday School teacher. She worked in the Wis./No. Mich. Assemblies of God District Office and at the Spencer Lake Bible Camp office during camp season. After the family moved to Springfield in 1968, they became members of Central Assembly of God, and Joanne sang in the choir for many years. Joanne was employed by the General Council of the Assemblies of God for 27 years in the Women’s Ministries Department. Her last position was leadership training coordinator, and she retired January 1, 1996. When not working, she had many interests and pastimes including traveling across the U.S. and overseas, baking—especially poppyseed bread, shopping, taking pictures, crocheting, doing puzzles, and spending time with friends. She loved Christmas and enjoyed decorating and entertaining. Nothing, however, brought her more fulfillment than being with her family. Joanne will be remembered as a bundle of energy, fun boss and coworker, wonderful friend, loyal daughter, devoted wife, and loving mom and grandma.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Jack Montag, sister Lois Cool, and brother-in-law Fred Cool. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Cheri and Doug Moos, Becki and Doug Iannone, and Jodi and Mark Harmon. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Caleb Moos, Colton and Sandie Moos, Kelsi and Matt Thomas, Sarra Satyadas and Martín Manrique, Sami and Adrian Chapman, Johnathon Harmon, and Emily and James McCullough. She was “Great Gramma Jo” to 10 great-grandchildren with another due any day. She is also survived by a multitude of relatives and friends.
Joanne was able to see all of her children and grandchildren in the last week of her life. She told each one she loved them and left a note that she wants to see all of them in heaven.
A visitation for Joanne will be held on Thursday, January 11, at noon, at Central Assembly of God. A service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Chaplain Shawn Oberg officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
