John David Allen, 55 years old, passed away Saturday, September 25, in his home after a sudden illness. John aka Johnny, as his family and some friends called him, was born June 28, 1966, to Jack and Mary (Black) Allen. He lived on and operated the Century Farm that had been in his family since 1874. He graduated from Strafford High School and Drury University. He had worked for City Utilities of Springfield for the past 20 years, most recently as Compliance Manager.
Johnny loved to camp. If he wasn’t camping with his family, he was running or backpacking and hiking with his second family, his running group. Johnny loved to run and had accomplished a 100-mile endurance run through the Mark Twain National Forest. He also ran many marathons, including one up and down Pike’s Peak in Colorado. He and several of his running buddies hiked the Grand Canyon from the north rim to the south rim. He will be greatly missed by his running buddies, a special group of friends.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Jack Allen, grandparents Jesse and Margie Allen, and Erma Alexander and Don Black, in-laws Melvin and Karen Dunn.
He will be greatly missed by his mother, Mary Allen, wife Carla Allen, daughter Emily Highley and husband Ethan, daughter Jessica Allen and granddaughter Cora Highley, his three sisters and their husbands, Sally and Jeff Reed, Susie and Ron Brown, and Janet and Tim Clements; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Glenda and Jim Scoggins. He is also survived by his brother Jason Allen and his family.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held Friday October 1, @ 1:00 pm at North Point Church, 3401 W. Norton Rd, Springfield.
A memorial fund has been set up in John’s name to provide scholarships for cross country runners at Strafford High School.
