John M. Taylor (Jack), 84, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011, at St. John’s Hospital. He was born November 7, 1926, in Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, Mexico. He was the son of Ralph and Hazel Taylor, who met in Mexico where Jack’s father worked as a millwright and his mother worked as a nurse.
Jack attended high school in Ash Flat, Arkansas, and went on to attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. On December 22, 1951, Jack married Catherina Kik. Jack and Catherina met at the University of Arkansas where they studied architecture. Jack was in the third graduating class of the School of Architecture, and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1952.
Jack and Catherina moved to Springfield where he practiced architecture, and worked for Richard Stahl, before opening his own office. In 1982, the Missouri Council of Architects presented Jack with the George I. Barnett Award for his contributions to the profession of architecture. In addition, Jack was involved in the establishment of the Hammons School of Architecture at Drury University. He enjoyed teaching courses in architecture there, and he valued his friendships with the students and faculty. In 2006, Jack was honored with the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Drury University.
He is survived by his daughter,
Marin, his sons, Ralph and John, his grandchildren, Suzy, Lundy and Marinus, and his sister, Mrs. Jeanne Locke, of Dickinson, Texas.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. in the First Unitarian Universalist Church, followed by a reception. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville, Arkansas.
